少しの間だけ、じっと考えてみてください。あなたが一番好きな東ドイツの映画はなんでしょうか？思いつかない？無理もありません、東ドイツで作られた映画は素晴らしいものでありながら、その41年にも足らない短い歴史の中、東区域の外に出ることはほとんどありませんでした。東ドイツ映画の存在は、同じドイツ語圏の人々からでさえ驚かれるほどだったのです。実はオーストリア人の友達に、一番好きな東ドイツ映画は何か、尋ねたことがあるのですが（これは1992年のことでした。まだ東西ドイツが統合して間もない頃のことです）、友達の反応は「え？東ドイツで映画なんて作ってたの？」というものでした。長年にわたって、私は様々な経歴を持つ多くの映画愛好者と話す機会がありましたが、その反応はみな似たようなものでした。批評家をはじめ、監督、俳優、他にも各国の映画に精通した人々でさえ、誰もこの質問にうまく答えられません。東ドイツ映画に関する人々の知識がいかに不足しているかは明らかです。
おそらく、日本では東ドイツ映画の知名度などほぼ皆無でしょう。そこで私たち筑波学院大学では、少しでも東ドイツ映画の素晴らしさを知ってもらうべく、この度、その短い歴史の中で作られた数々の優れた東ドイツ映画作品を紹介するイベントを開催することに致しました。偶然とはいえ本学教員の一人も東ドイツ出身で、映画字幕翻訳に携わる仕事をしてきたことも、良いきっかけとなりました。本映画祭が、今後の日本における映画教育に貢献できるものとなりましたら幸いです。
Just for a moment, think hard and choose your favorite East German film of all time. Having trouble? It is no wonder. East German cinema, wonderful as it was, barely made it out of the East Bloc during its brief history, which fell just four days shy of 41 years. Even in the German speaking world, reactions to East German cinema were astonishing. For example, I asked an Austrian friend what film he liked best (in 1992, not long after East Germany reunited with West Germany). His answer: "Did they make any movies in East Germany?" During discussions with film aficionados of all backgrounds, this reaction was common. Critics, directors, actors, in addition to others familiar with global cinema, were stumped by this question. It became evident that knowledge about East German films was sorely lacking.
In Japan, the situation is perhaps worse yet. Therefore, it was decided that the International Liberal Arts Department at Tsukuba Gakuin University would help to ameliorate this situation by holding a festival to share some of the finest films of East Germany's short life. Since one of the professors there was born in East Germany and worked on subtitling some of the films, it seemed the perfect undertaking for contributing to the ongoing education of the cinematic public in Japan.
